A Study of Matthew’s Gospel (1:1-17)

Succession and Scandal  (1:1-17)

  1. What does Matthew immediately want his audience to know about Jesus from what he writes in the genealogy?
  2. Listed in Matthew’s genealogical record of Jesus are four women:
  • Tamar (Gen. 38:6-24),
  • Rahab (Joshua 2:1),
  • Ruth  (Ruth 1),
  • Bathsheba (2 Sam. 11:1-5)

3.   What do all four of these women have in common?

4.   Why does Matthew mention these women in the genealogy of Jesus and not some more notable women?
