- Jesus looks at the multitude that has followed Him and He “heads for the hills.” Speaking to the character of the people, Jesus tells them that they are blessed if they possess a certain attribute and that as a result of this condition they will acquire what those without this trait cannot possess. What attributes are mentioned in this section?
- The word blessed has often been defined as “happy”, however, it is much more than simply being happy. The word means to be fully and completely satisfied. Each pronouncement of those who are blessed is followed by a “reason” for their blessedness. Why then is each person considered “blessed” or fully satisfied?
- In verse 20 it is stated that the people’s righteousness must be greater than the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees if they are to enter the kingdom of heaven. Looking back at the previous verses, how might that be accomplished?
