Judges 7:9-10 ESV
That same night the Lord said to him, “Arise, go down against the camp, for I have given it into your hand.10 But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Purah your servant.
“But if you are afraid to go down, go down…”. This command from God may have caught Gideon completely off guard. Instead of bo0sting his confidence, it may have caused him to be more hesitant. Gideon was no hero apart from the Lord. As a matter-of-fact, Gideon’s story opens with him hiding in a winepress threshing wheat. The courage that Gideon possessed came straight from the Lord and it is a testimony to us that when God goes before us then we are capable of doing things beyond are natural abilities.
God commanded him to go down even if he was afraid and He gave him permission to bring help. Notice that God sent him down after assuring him that the land would be his. “I have given the land into your hand.” Oftentimes we waste energy fighting battles that aren’t ours to fight in the first place. We loose sleep stressing about how we could possibly do such an incredible thing. The Lord says that even you’re afraid, even if it seems impossible, even if you are outnumbered, “go down” because He has given the land into your hand.” Trust in the Lord and do not lean on your own understanding. You can to all things as the Lord strengthens you, but without Him you cannot do anything.
