Kwanzaa Meditation

UmojaHabri Gani!

1)Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! 2) It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! 3) It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the LORD has commanded the blessing, life forevermore (Psalms 133).

As the New Year approaches and resolutions are being considered, may we all make unity our goal!

As Americans we pride ourselves on being a “melting-pot” where diversity has a name and a home. This is one of the most unique and defining qualities of our nation. Yet, there still remains a need for further growth in the area of unity. It appears to me that we are mostly united only by geography. I find it very appropriate that the first principle in Kwanzaa is umoja. Unless we are united as a family, community, nation, and race we will find it extremely difficult to accomplish the other six principles.

Today families suffer, as more homes are broken now than before. If harmony does not exist within the family we may have a very tough time finding it within our communities. When there is disunion within our communities it starts to eat away at the fabric of our nation and then it’s every man for him/herself.

Almost daily you will hear someone pray for God to “bless these United States of America.” This prayer is heard from the president down to the poorest person you know, but the psalmist reminds us that God has placed the blessing within the unity of kin. God is the perfect example of Unity in Diversity. It was the Triune God in Jesus the Son reconciling the world through His sacrificial love. To us who believe, Holy Spirit is sent to take up residence within us that we may be empowered to glorify God as we are obedient to His will. Learn from Christ’s example.

A Prayer

Eternal and Triune God you are perfect in unity! May we, this day imitate you. Empower us by your Most Holy Spirit to live our lives in harmony with one another. Help us dear Lord to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Help us to fight for unity within our families and may our efforts bleed over into our communities until our nation may live up to the true meaning of its name – the UNITED States of America!
