Encouragement for Today (Hebrews 3:7-15)

  • Let’s begin with a couple of questions.
      1. What warning signs do you wish were in place for your spiritual journey w/Christ?
      2. How would you like for these signs to be displayed? (A big booming voice from heaven, billboards, on side of the road, commercials, etc).
  • Hebrews 3:7-15
    1. This section of scripture is held together by a compositional law known as inclusio. Inclusio is when one piece of material in a passage is bracketed by an identical piece of material. This could show up as identical words or identical thoughts.
    2. In this case, the “brackets” would be verses 7-8 and 15. These are general statements. What happens in between these brackets gives us the details.
      1. The author of Hebrews has already told us that God does speak and that we can hear Him. The author also warned us to not neglect the great salvation of our Lord. Here, Believers are warned to NOT harden their hearts when they hear God’s voice.
      2. What would you say causes a persons heart to become hard toward God?
  • Matt. 13:20-22
    1. Does it matter if we persevere in our faith? Explain.
    2. The main point that the author of Hebrews is trying to make is this, “we as [B]elievers must persevere in faithfulness to God by listening to His voice and obeying His Word” (p. 45). This is how true faith expresses itself. We can’t give up halfway on the journey like the Israelites did.
    3. See Exo. 14:29-30; Ps. 95:8-11.
      1. How did the Israelites rebel against God in the wilderness?
      2. In what way(s) is their rebellion similar to how Believers today waver in their faith?
      3. Verse 12 of Hebrews 3 tells us to “watch out” so that unbelief does not take root in our hearts.
        1. 2 Corinthians 13:5
        2. How can we keep a watch over our own hearts so that we endure in trusting God?
        3. How can we encourage each other to say faithful to God?
  • In conclusion
    1. Again, the point of these verses is that we are not to allow our hearts to become harden toward God because of the difficulties of this life. Rather, we are to remain faithful to God despite our circumstances. We are also responsible for holding each other accountable to persevering in Christ.
    2. So, if you hear God speaking, obey!
